MEREDITH COLEMAN MCGEE, JAMES MEREDITH: WARRIOR AND THE AMERICA THAT CREATED HIM 71–73 (2013). Describing his experience, Meredith, who had previously served in the military, stated, “I was not a student. I was a soldier in a war. . . . Students threw rocks and firecrackers at me. They insulted me, but I never allowed anyone to get close to me. . . . I considered myself engaged in a War from day one.” Id. at 72–73 (citations omitted) (internal quotation marks omitted). 124 Id. at 71–74. Reflecting upon the entirety of the experience, Meredith wrote to Robert Kennedy in 1963:
