EDITORIAL REVIEW

Fostering Love: Resilience, Growth, and Triumph By Diane Williams is a memoir based on the author’s early life. Names of certain people were changed to protect their privacy. Diane Williams was born to an incarcerated mother in Union Township, New Jersey, USA. She was placed in the foster care system at birth; she spent the first 10 years of her life with her maternal great-grandmother and her step great grandfather.

Diane was removed from her household when her great grandmother died. Diane’s life turned 360 degrees afterward from stability to a story like the land of Oz – wild and untamed. Diane describes the snow blizzards and beasty winds she endured. The Afterthought brings readers up to speed. Surviving the scars and setting goals gave Diane direction and new life. Bravo!

Advance Praise for Fostering Love

Fostering Love is a gripping journey from “Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen” to “I’m So Glad Trouble Doesn’t Last Always.” Themes of family trauma, domestic violence, sexual abuse, mental illness, friendship, perseverance, and love are woven throughout the book. Fostering Love demonstrates the ongoing power of family oral history.

Sometimes stories in a person’s life are described as stones. Diane Williams carried more than her fair share. Although her stones were heavier than most, she not only endured them but thrived and now shares the unvarnished realities of her life.

When meeting Williams, one would never imagine the abuse, poverty, racism, and mental illness in her past. Mired in such an environment and experiencing such devastating trauma should have left her hopeless. However, Fostering Love is a testament to her strong will, determination, and expectations of a worthy life for herself and her sons. Williams possesses an inner strength that drives her forward in pursuit of a substantial life and significant love, and she has become a captivating woman to whom most gravitate.

Who are your people?” is a question often asked during introductions. This honest recollection of her “people” strikes a chord with us; for we all have stories we may be reluctant to tell and are stones we carry.

▪ Julia Brewer Daily, award-winning novels, No Names to Be Given & The Fifth Daughter of Thorn Ranch.

Diane Williams is a gifted storyteller, and her memoir is a powerful American story. She survives relentless physical abuse… and the violent ravings of a beloved but mentally ill mother. And her story is artfully told. Throughout the narrative, candy — Life Savers, chocolate laxatives — serves as a sort of metaphor. Even that which is sweet turns sour.”

God will let people reach out to help you. That’s what my daddy believed. Diane’s daddy loved her just like my daddy loved me.

No one should ever have to go through what we experienced as children. We had each other and with the help of Jehovah God that made the difference
