Meredith Coleman McGee shared history lessons with young learners at the Lexington Public Library
Meredith Coleman McGee shared history lessons from Nashida: Visits the Smith Robertson Museum with young readers and learners at the Lexington Public Library earlier today. Two nine year old twin sisters were regular library patrons who read over five books per week. A first grader was learning to identify words. McGee received a few history lessons from community elders. One library patron McKinney Thomas attended Smith Robertson School during the 1945-46 school year. He attended the old Lanier High School. He recalled that he and his attire family used to ride Jackson’s city bus from home to church (Morning Star Baptist Church) every Sunday during the 1940-50s. One elder shared her love for Margaret Walker Alexander. The librarian grabbed books on Frederick Douglass, Richard Wright, and Sojourner Truth for children to check out. They had never heard of these great Black Americans.
It was a very fun day.
The events was sponsored by Friends of the Lexington Public Library.
